Amateur Golfer Karen Delaney has been awarded the Talbot Hotel and KCLR96FM “Sporting Heroes” award for August 2011.
Karen, who’s an admissions officer with Carlow College juggles a busy work schedule with practising her golf as well as taking part in national competitions and representing Ireland at competitions abroad.
She took up the sport at a very young age and she and her sister, professional golfer Tara Delaney have competed in many events from a young age and have collected many prizes over the years with their success.
This summer has been a busy one for Karen in particular, earlier this summer she came agonising close to winning the Lancome Irish Women’s Close Championship which was held at her home club in Carlow.
Karen was then selected on the Irish Ladies golf team for the European Championships in Austria at the start of July and most recently represented her country at the Women’s Home International in England.
She did get silverware this summer, winning the Woodbrook Scratch Cup.
Even though Ladies Golf is considered a minority sport, Karen’s success has been celebrated in Carlow and with the Solheim Cup upon us Ladies Golf will be firmly placed on the map, so with the remarkable achievements of Karen to date, it was deemed appropriate that she should be awarded the Talbot Hotel and KCLR96FM “Sporting Heroes” Award for August 2011
